Cirque de Flambé
MAGNUSON PARK, SEATTLE, WA :: Fire has a mystique that captivates us. Its dancing flames hypnotize us. For most of human history, we have relied on fire to keep us warm, to prepare our food, and to forge our tools. But fire can also kill. Whether by innate instinct or conscious choice, fire demands our attention and respect.

Basically, what I'm saying is that Kristie and I gladly payed to see a bunch of clowns playing with fire. That's the Cirque de Flambé in a nutshell. I normally despise clowns, but I'll watch if there's a chance of one being immolated. At Magnuson Park, a huge cast of them juggled, twirled, hula hooped, shot, danced, and jumped rope with fire. Most of the show was entertaining and funny, but some parts seemed to drag on. It was clear that these performers were fire dancers first, and actors second. At times we were pleading, "We get it, poor Fifi was cremated. Next explosion please!"

The show was accompanied by live music from the Fremont Philharmonic and included a performance by an impressive trio of acrobats that balanced all over each other. For the guys, there are several scantily clad women too. The biggest and best pyrotechnics are saved for the finale, which guarantees to thrill the inner caveman in everyone. It was probably the closest I'll ever come to seeing a nuclear mushroom cloud.
